Crowded Teeth
As our mouth and jaw form and grow, our teeth may shift to make room for
other teeth to appear or they can spread out to fill empty room, and this
can lead to crowded teeth and spacing problems. While our teeth may have
first shown up straight and in a nice line, they might not have stayed in
that perfect position. Whether they've been pushed aside by late-arriving
wisdom teeth or have shifted to fill gaps caused by missing or lost teeth,
our teeth may no longer present a straight, even appearance, and that may
end up giving us a smile we're embarrassed to show. A cosmetic
dentist or orthodontist can help fix the problem.
Sometimes our teeth may form too big to fit neatly in our mouth, and
when they appear, they may have to crowd in and push other teeth around
to fit. This can push all our teeth closer together and give our mouth
a crowded look, with uneven spacing between our teeth. Crooked, crowded
teeth are much harder to keep clean, and this can lead to infections,
decay, and other dental problems.
While we may not think of them this way, our teeth are living things
that adapt to changes in their environment. If space opens up next to
one tooth because another tooth is lost or missing, it may begin moving
over to fill the opening. This can lead to new gaps, which can lead to
other teeth moving out of position and the nooks and crannies this creates
can serve as a harbor for bacteria and plaque.
To correct these problems and restore our teeth to their healthy and attractive
places, a cosmetic orthodontist has a variety of treatments available. Spacing
issues can be fixed by slowly aligning the teeth through the use of traditional
braces, Damon brackets, or
by the Invisalign system
that uses a series of invisible aligners to achieve a pleasant, even smile.
Missing teeth can be replaced by dental
implants before other teeth move into the empty spot, or your orthodontist
can move teeth crowding into the space back out so that room for the implant
is available. The end result is the same: a smile you can be proud of that
reflects your healthy mouth!
